In many ways American workers are worse off than the slaves of the 19 century. Slaves were expensive to purchase. They were property. Successful masters,(business owners) would not mistreat slaves anymore than they would the cattle, horses or other "livestock" they had. It would be counterproductive and costly reducing profit and output. Slaves had to be housed, fed, clothed and taken care of medically to maintain their output. That was the responsibility of the owner not the slave. Some owners paid the slaves and they were allowed to save money and purchase their freedom.
Today the shackles are wages, taxes, the economic system and laws which our elected officials impose on us to create what is a hidden form of slavery. The masters of today no longer have to take care of their property. That has become the new form of "freedom" for the working class. The slave has the "freedom" to leave one master for another equally as bad or worse. The slave now has to provide for their own basic needs on whatever the master pays them.
Obama care shifted the medical care burden from the corporations to the individual. That not only increased profits for the employer, but increased profits for the insurance companies, as well as the financial institutions by allowing bankruptcies from hidden medical charges and uncovered procedures.
The minimum wage which was originally intended only for unskilled a workers entering the workforce is now the measurement of the basic wage for all, regardless of how much experience they have. That minimum wage standard has woefully lagged behind inflation even for unskilled high school students. Basic essentials are not even counted in inflation calculations. Inflation is a deliberately calculated and reported figure.
The "safety nets" the government claims to have in place to protect the citizens are actually a subsidy to major corporations as many people who are using them are working one or more jobs. "Social security" was replaced with the Individual Retirement Account from Reaganomics which millions of Americans saw wiped out in the "crash" of 2008 when the "money just disappeared".
Thanks to Reaganomics the government is now being run like a corporation by being privatized and run for profit. While eliminating it's responsibilities it increases taxes to citizens and privatization results in increased costs for consumers. And the trend continues. The principal behind Reaganomics was to lower taxes to corporations which would allow them to invest in Americans jobs. Instead it allowed them to invest in Chinese slavery and eliminate American jobs and avoid regulations imposed by the EPA, OSHA and others which lowered profit margins. NAFTA did the same thing.
With a majority of Americans not only living paycheck to paycheck,"You're fired" is a disaster.
Now slaves are Free. Free to the corporations and government who own them that is. Americans are disposable commodities to be traded and used until they are no further use.
It isn't of excess to call it what it is. If we, the workers of the factories, leave as they demand if we don't like our wages, we will starve. It is psychological warfare.
Spend all on rent and food ?
Well, at least I'm not alone there.
But this gives one pause to ask, what funds are left to buy boots with ?
Or warm jackets?
Where to find the bread to pay co-pays, so insurance CEOs can make millions a year ?
Perhaps when they've milked us dry,they will starve from lack of hosts .
