In Animal Farm and even 1984 he never disparages egalitarian ideals, only those in power who subvert them and abuse the good intentions of their followers. Homage To Catalonia speaks to his personal engagement with these ideals in the Spanish Civil War, and is as complimentary to stateless communism as it is negative towards Stalinist Sovietism.
Last year Monthly Review reprinted Einstein’s essay “Why Socialism?” in honor of its 75th anniversary, as it was originally featured in their inaugural issue in 1949. It’s a coveted addition to my magazine rack. This was a great article. Thank you for sharing.
