Minor pet peeve: The Roman Empire did not fall in 476. I prefer setting the end at 1453, but at minimum, the Roman Empire lasted till 565 when Justinian died.

As many/most people do. My problem (as in it’s my personal hangup, not a problem with anything you’ve done) is that after listening to Mike Duncan’s “The History of Rome” podcast, I listened to about 150 episodes of Robin Pierson’s “The History of Byzantium”. That series makes it pretty clear that the people of the eastern empire thought of themselves as Roman. In a few isolated areas, this continued into the 20th Century.

Aside from that, I’ve read three of your essays on capitalism so far, and I think they are great. Looking forward to catching up with the rest of them.

I picked when when the German chieftain Odoacer deposed the Western emperor Romulus Augustulus - although I know that doesn’t include the Eastern Empire. I should probably add a footnote to clarify this.
